Volunteer Abroad believes that a thorough volunteer orientation is an essential component of a successful volunteer experience. Without a detailed orientation, volunteers are often overwhelmed by the stress of living and working independently in a community where they are unfamiliar with the culture, customs and language. This stress is often a significant distraction that makes it more difficult for a volunteer to be productive at their placement.
Every volunteer on the Volunteer Abroad program is required to participate in our 2-day volunteer orientation which covers critical health, safety and placement specific information. The 2-day orientation is sufficient for volunteers who are participating in a one or two week program and are staying at the BaseCamp Center.
However, we strongly encourage each volunteer to take part in our 7-day volunteer orientation and volunteer training program. Many volunteers have told us that this extensive collection of workshops and language training sessions made a huge difference in helping them prepare for living and volunteering overseas in a truly immersed environment. The 7-day volunteer orientation begins with the same first two days as the 2-day volunteer orientation and continues with five additional days of orientation and basic language training. Each day of this volunteer training is outlined in these pages linked to here.
We believe that volunteer training is so important that there is no additional charge for volunteers to take this extended 7-day program. We simply believe that we provide better prepared volunteers who will have more success at their placement once they have been adequately trained. We do not want cost to be a deterent for volunteers to take the 7 day volunteer orientation program which we strongely recommend.
