Volunteer Ghana

A mecca for NGO work, Ghana, in West Africa, provides a "real" African experience to volunteers looking to make a difference.

Goats meander down the busy streets, women with babies strapped to their backs sell plantain on the side of the road and packed local markets play music well into the night. Volunteers are immersed in Ghana's vibrant culture as soon as they walk off the plane.

Ghana's landscape is comprised of plains and low plateaus covered by rain forest in the west and Lake Volta to the east. Considered part of the Gold Coast, Ghana was part of the British Empire until it gained independence in 1957, when President Kwamwe Nkrumah became a leading voice for Pan-Africanism.

Ghana's population consists of about 24 million people and the official language is English. However, there are a variety of indigenous languages that are widespread. With respect to religious beliefs, Christianity is the most prevalent religion, followed by Islam. There is still a small percentage of the population that practice traditional African religions.
