Due to the decrease in the coffee trade, tourism is now a dominate factor in Costa Rica's economy . Therefore, learning the English language has become a necessity for many employment opportunities. An international volunteer interested in teaching English has a wide scope of placements to chose from. What particular branch of volunteering do you wish to pursue? Costa Rica has an opening available for almost any type of volunteering experience.
Ecuador
Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America and therefore one of the easiest and least expensive countries to travel. An adventurer's paradise from the Amazon Basin, Andean Volcanoes, Galapagos Islands to its Tropical Forests and Coastal Beaches, the experiences available for a international volunteer are endless.
Most native Ecuadorians living in rural communities have limited access to medical care and basic education. As many as 45% of Ecuador's children are forced into labour with only an elementary education, this therefore, decreases possible future earning potential for them. Any international volunteer interested in assisting with educational initiatives and/or medical initiatives, for street youth, children from low income families, single mothers etc. is needed and greatly appreciated. There are also social and conservation placements seeking international volunteer help.
Ghana
Ghana is another one of BaseCamp's exciting volunteer destinations, with its ancient and diverse culture, fascinating history and warm, friendly people it is truly an African treasure. Visit one of Ghana's many Nature Reserves where you will be sure to see an abundance of the wildlife they are known for or visit some of their packed local markets.
However, Ghanaians have experienced many hardships from slavery to food shortages and suffering through decades of economic and political instability. Ghana, is now moving towards improving their socioeconomic status but there remains many social, educational, environmental and health issues that organizations are striving to address and the need of international volunteer help is most urgent. This is an exciting time to be an international volunteer in one of Africa's most fascinating and diverse countries.
Nepal
Nepal, is seeped in history and ancient religion, where holy men wander the streets of this Himalayan gateway on pilgrimages and is one of BaseCamp's volunteer destinations. Temples, holy shrines, yoga and meditation retreats abound. The country is also a worldwide hotspot for any international volunteer who enjoys trekking, climbing, rafting or kayaking.
The United Nations classifies Nepal as one of the poorest countries in the world. Any international volunteer from any background and skill set is needed to assist with organizations located in Nepal. Program opportunities include: assisting with environmental campaigns, contributing to women's rights campaigns, providing vocational training to individuals with Leprosy as well as others and teaching English to children including those whose parents are in prison. A vast number of medical services also require international volunteer assistance. Hundreds of non-governmental organizations are working hard to help manage the challenges Nepal faces and volunteering in this distressed country is a life changing experience for some volunteers.
Tanzania
Tanzania, captures the very essence of Africa in one country. A land of contrasts and majesty with its snow-capped summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, its sun-kissed beaches of Zanzibar, its vast herds of game grazing on the Serengeti plains and the slow volcanic eruption of Oi Donyo Lengai, Tanzania offers something for almost any traveller and is one of the seven volunteer destinations of BaseCamp.
Tanzania, is one of the least developed countries in Africa, although it is one of its most politically stable. Many of its people are faced with extreme poverty, the uprising of AIDS and a lack of access to education. Our international volunteer program is partnered with organizations in Tanzania that provide medical, social, teaching and conservation services. Public health programs focused on HIV/AIDs awareness, nutrition, hygiene and malaria prevention require volunteers of all backgrounds. Educational initiatives such as school improvement programs, literacy promotion campaigns and teaching/classroom assistance are important for both schools and orphanages. An international volunteer would have a vast scope of volunteering experiences to choose from.
