Public Health Volunteer Ghana
Similar to many developing nations, in Ghana, many residents suffer from illnesses that are preventable though education and awareness. Any public health volunteer that can help to educate communities in the city or in rural areas has the potential of helping residents protect themselves from numerous deadly illnesses.
A public health volunteer placement may involve: teaching public populations about water hygiene to prevent cholera outbreaks, teaching about sexual health to avoid contracting HIV and/or teaching about basic health, hygiene and nutritional issues.
A public health volunteering position may also involve helping their host organization's staff: deliver presentations, conduct research and write pamphlets. There are a multitude of ways that a public health volunteer can make a worthwhile contribution.
While these placements are ideal for those with a background in the health field, some placements may be open to those without such experience. Those without experience should be prepared to independently research and educate themselves in pertinent health issues. Any international public health volunteer should be confident in their communication skills and enjoy public speaking and presentation engagements.
A public health volunteer will not be required to learn the Twi language as all placements will be working in the English language. However, past volunteers have expressed their appreciation of the basic Twi language course taught in the seven day orientation program at BaseCamp. They felt it helped them to function more effectively in their everyday activities. Another alternative would be to take a basic Twi language course prior to your arrival date.
