Children's Home Improvement Youth Project
Costa Rica has made great strides in addressing the health and sanitation problems that they faced in the early and mid nineteenth century. Through their investments in developing social supports, several centers were created to provide education, food and a home for their most at-risk populations. While these homes provide a vital service, the repair and maintenance of the facilities is often re-prioritized for other more pressing needs. As such, several of these homes are in need of assistance.
This July we will be coordinating a team of volunteers between the ages of 15 to 19 who will participate in an improvement youth volunteer project, assisting one of these children's homes. Youth volunteers will be working to help with painting, plaster repairs, furniture repairs and basic maintenance of the facility. This youth volunteer project will help to ensure that the children living in this home have a clean, fun and safe environment in which to live.
As a youth volunteer project, this program is considerably different than our independent volunteer program. There will be staff to chaperon the group in the evenings and at the home overnight. During the day, a BaseCamp staff will be on the work site with the group coordinating activities liaising with the local partners. As well, the group will be sharing in private transportation to and from the work site each day as opposed to finding their own way to work on local transportation.
