A dental assistant volunteer at Costa Rica's centre for Cleft Lip & Palate Children, in San Jose would assist the children and a very busy dentist in all aspects of dental health.
Dental assistant volunteers do not need any special education or past experience but they should have basic computer knowledge and good organizational and communication skills. Naturally, some placements are only appropriate for trained dental assistants. However, many placements simply need assistance with clinic administration or with delivering basic dental hygiene training in the community.
For placements requiring qualified dental assistants, volunteers would be asked to assist the dentists and staff at the placements with routine work. Tasks such as preparing patients for their appointments, sterilizing dental instruments and equipment, setting up instrument trays and assisting the dentist during dental procedures would all be responsibilities of a qualified dental assistant volunteer.
