Part of the experience of visiting a new country and volunteering, is to travel. We suggest you decide before hand with your country coordinator what excursions you might be interested in doing so that you can plan appropriately.
Most volunteer placements allow you to travel on the weekend, however if you want to make sure you don't miss a particular excursion that may take more time than 2 days, plan to stay longer in order to have this once in a lifetime experience. Here are some getaway ideas!
One of three ancient capitals in the Kathmandu Valley, along with Kathmandu and Bhakatapur. Perched on a plateau, Patan scores high marks for its wealth of artisans. After seeing the monuments and temples, indulge in some retail therapy on Kopundol Road; lined with shops that tempt with handmade paper goods, hand-printed fabrics, pottery and more.
Travellers head to Pokhara, Lukla, or Besi Sahar, where the treks begin. Highlights may include panoramic views of the Himalayas, a river crossing followed by an ascent to Kalikasthan, a tea shop lunch in Mati Thana and a visit to the market in the village of Gurung.
The park (established 1973) is now a World Heritage Site that gives refuge to Bengal tigers, single-horned Asian rhinos, elephants and others. You can tour the jungle for about an hour and a half on the back of an elephant. There are early-morning and late-afternoon trips. Bird lovers gravitate toward a canoe trip down the Rapti River.
